Habitats and “mini beasts”:

While working on tidying up the woodland area, special care was taken to respect its natural integrity while creating suitable habitats for a balance of creatures to find cover. This was achieved by clearing overgrown and neglected areas of bramble, while thinning out trees to let in light so that ecology can be studied more clearly.

Coppicing is an age old traditional method of harvesting timber while allowing the tree to regenerate quickly, often practised by hurdle makers. Habitat piles constructed by stacking up rough timber to decompose will provide a good home for a variety of insects toads and hedgehogs. By observing these kind of habitats children can easily see the beginnings of how the food chain cycle works in an active fun and exciting way.

Forest School is an initiative being implemented in many schools to help teach children a basic understanding of environmental issues, permaculture, which is a term to describe self-sufficiency or working the land and a greater respect for the natural elements of the world in which they live.

One of the latest schools to introduce this to their teaching plan is Marpool Primary School in Exmouth, Devon.

Plantation Gardening - Where we come in:

Marpool Primary School asked us, at Plantation Gardening, for practical assistance and advice to help develop its many plans with the Forest School scheme. Plantation Gardening is very proud to be of assistance in every way possible so that we can broaden the horizons of younger generations to come.

Chickens:

It is a sad fact that in our modern world, it is not commonly understood by young children how their food reaches their table every day.

One small way we can help rectify this is to not only show them, but to give them the opportunity to experience the process.

This has been achieved by establishing a chicken coup for the children to visit, collect the eggs and help to care for their needs on a daily basis. This is a fun and educational method of increasing children’s awareness of food production and animal husbandry.

Vegetables:

With the building of eight new raised beds, combined with an already existing vegetable patch the children can now clearly experience the growing process of different vegetables from sowing the seeds to eating the produce.

All organic - of course!

Schools grounds maintenance:
Plantation Gardening are able to provide professional and efficient grounds maintenance service to schools, educational, sports and medical facilities etc in the southwest. If you would like to contact Tom Bell for a consultation then please see the contact page.
